Wow. The intensity of this. The imagery. Titanic, metallic, flesh. Forced onto the page through typography, and into my mind through text. This story is a masterpiece, but really, I think it pays off most in the use of footnotes. All the tension and pressure of the prose suddenly stops. Hangs on a word. As the reader is drawn back to themselves, enveloped briefly in a different sense, from one of motion, to a moment of terror. It’s a beautiful narrative device - well used throughout to give what is already a remarkable text a novel depth of experience.
